Project Description
The Courtyard House is a contemporary family residence in Pune that organises all living spaces around a central, light-filled court. The project responds to the specific climate of the Deccan plateau — hot, dry summers and a dramatic monsoon season — by using the courtyard as a passive cooling device, a source of natural light, and the emotional heart of the home.
The house is built in two distinct bands: a private zone to the north comprising bedrooms and studies, and a social zone to the south housing living, dining and kitchen. These are connected by a covered verandah that wraps the courtyard on three sides, creating a transitional space between interior and exterior.
Materials are deliberately restrained — exposed concrete, local basalt stone, and teak joinery — chosen for their thermal performance, longevity and honest expression.
Design Concept
“The concept emerged from a simple observation: the traditional Indian haveli organised life around a central void. The courtyard was not empty space — it was the most important space. We wanted to reclaim that logic in a contemporary language.”
Every room in the house faces the court. Every room has a view of sky. The section is carefully calibrated so that in summer, the deep overhangs shade the glass; in winter, the low sun reaches the floor slab, warming it through the day.
